Learning More About Economic Inequity

Economic inequity is a serious problem across the world. Whether it's in the workplace, school, or health care, it’s everywhere.

After reading a number of stories online, it is safe to say that I did not realize how awful this problem truly is. Of course, topics like poverty and race discrimination cross my mind often. However, when it is put into perspective of how big the problem in the world really is, it is quite baffling.

I now realize the narrative of the “American dream” is unrealistic and is really only achievable by a privileged community of people.

The Cincinnati NAACP states the major inconsistencies of employment, homeownership, and house affordability for the black community compared to white families. White families, on average, make 10 times more than black families.

It is sad to see narratives about race and the unfairness that still occurs in our country even today.

After reading an article by Sylvia Schmelkes from the United Nations, I found this fact surprising. She stated that 258 million, or 17%, of the world’s children are not in school.

Growing up, you think of school as a chore. It is something that most kids do not look forward to. After hearing that fact, it puts a lot into perspective. An education is a privilege that unfortunately not everyone gets to experience.

What’s startling to me is that things do not have to be like this. If there is commitment in society and governments, it is possible to create a more equitable society.

Honestly, after reading all of these articles, it made me feel angry. I feel angry that issues like these are not at the top of the list for governments. These are huge issues that affect the lives of millions.

This gave me inspiration for our project on economic inequity. I am interested in studying these topics further to truly understand what would have to be changed and why it has not been changed yet.
